about

The Monash Sessions are an ongoing series of albums curated by jazz staff at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance, Monash University, featuring acclaimed artists alongside Monash staff and students. Artists in this series of releases include Hermeto Pascoal, Linda May Han Oh, Kenny Werner, Sandy Evans, Ralph Alessi, Judy Bailey, Ben Monder, Kate Ceberano, Mike Nock, Andrea Keller, Vince Jones, and Tony Gould.

This release features the acclaimed Canadian composer, trumpeter, and educator Ingrid Jensen alongside jazz students from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. Jensen is a musician at the top of her game - renowned for extraordinary improvisational skills and rich tone, she has left an indelible mark on the jazz world, inspiring countless musicians with her exceptional artistry. This recording enabled students the privilege and rare opportunity to rehearse, perform, and record the compositions alongside the composer. This unique student experience is a key pedagogical approach within the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, with established artists mentoring the emerging generation of jazz musicians. Amazingly, these detailed and highly interactive compositions of Jensen's were created asynchronously (due to the recording being undertaken during one of Melbourne's extended COVID-19-related lockdowns).

A huge thanks to Ingrid for her generosity of time, patience, and inspiration throughout this project. A special thanks to the Monash University student performers for their creativity and professionalism. We are thrilled with the outcome and hope you enjoy it too!
